Clean Up Australia Day success

The Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett has praised locals for their great efforts to clean up the Hawkesbury as part of Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, 4 March.

“This is a record breaking year for Clean Up Australia Day in the Hawkesbury, specifically because we’ve had the largest number of sites ever registered, a total of 50 sites, and the largest number of community sites registered, with a total of 30 sites,” the Mayor said.

“Once again, we are all very proud of the manner in which our residents, schools, businesses and many organisations have united to make the Hawkesbury shiny and clean again.

“I know we all take great pride in the fact that we live in the beautiful Hawkesbury and that we want to care for our environment and keep it clean.”

Close to 100 volunteers gathered rubbish from sites ranging from Bilpin to Colo Heights, and from Pitt Town to Windsor Downs.

As well as the 30 community sites, there were also eight youth sites, such as Scouts and Girl Guides, and 12 school sites.

“The community participation this year has been phenomenal,” Councillor Lyons-Buckett continued.

“My thanks to everyone involved for donating their time and hard work, including all the organisations and schools who wanted to make a positive difference to our area.

“Congratulations to Pitt Town Progress Association, which had the largest number of volunteers again this year, with close to 50 volunteers coming along to help. There were five different sites around Pitt Town which were all cleaned up.”

Residents and organisations can register for Clean Up Australia Day at any time during the year. Please note that a community clean up site is defined as, and must be, a public place such as a park or sports field, not private property.
