Young local artist wins prestigious art prize

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne awarded up-and-coming artist Dilara Niriella with a Certificate of Achievement Award on Wednesday, April 4.

The art school student from Bella Vista recently won first prize in the tertiary category in the prestigious Mosman Youth Art Prize for her life-like painting of her surgeon father, Anupa.

The detailed work of art, titled Sorry to interrupt…, showcases her father in scrubs, while holding medical equipment in the middle of surgery.

The Mosman Youth Art Prize is an annual competition which was initiated by renowned artist Ken Done 30 years ago and receives more than 400 entries annually from youngsters, aged between 12-21, from all over Sydney.

Ms Niriella’s award-winning painting will be on exhibition, along with other award-wining paintings, at Mosman Art Gallery till April 15.

To add, in 2016, Dilara was announced one of four winners of the Young Archie competition alongside Baulkham Hills resident Mikael Woo.

The competition, which runs alongside the annual Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes, allows children and teenagers aged between 5 and 18 to create and submit a portrait of someone special in their life.
