The Hon Alex Hawke MP, Federal Member for Mitchell

Last month during a tumultuous week in the Liberal Party room, the decision was made to change our Prime Minister resulting in the appointment of Scott Morrison as the new Leader of the Federal Parliamentary Liberal Party and Prime Minister, and the appointment of Josh Frydenberg as the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party and Treasurer.

The community of Mitchell can always be confident that I hold the view that it is the public who should decide who the Prime Minister is – this is democracy at its best. I would like to pay tribute to former Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull and thank him for his service to us and the nation.

Following the change of leader, it was an honour and privilege to be appointed to the Executive Council as Special Minister of State in the first Morrison Government. I was humbled to be given the opportunity by the Prime Minister to serve in this role.

This appointment is important for us in Mitchell as it is the first time an elected representative for Mitchell will sit on a Coalition Government frontbench. As Special Minister of State I will work directly with the Prime Minister and the Minister for Finance and the Public Service, Senator the Hon Mathias Cormann to ensure we have a strong, vibrant economy and a well-run democracy.

The Prime Minister has already toured one of the worst drought affected areas of our nation and more will be done to help our farmers during this time. Also the issue of electricity prices, will continue to be addressed including, energy security and reliable power; ensuring we are backing investment in new power generation with coal-fired power in the mix. We are a Government that is focused on getting power prices down.
