Sydney Hills Economy Doubles in Eight Years

The Sydney Hills economy has more than doubled in just eight years, according to figures from Compelling Economics.

Council accesses reports that detail the contributions of industry sectors across measures of economic activity in the Hills – including output, employment, local sales, expenditure, regional imports and Gross Regional Product for more than 100 different industry sectors.

Statistics from these reports show that in 2007, total output (sales) in the area was estimated at close to $9.8 billion. Just eight years later, in 2015, total output had grown to an impressive $18.2 billion.
“Clearly, the Sydney Hills is a force to be reckoned with both regionally and nationally,” Mayor Byrne said.

“Anyone looking to establish their business here will be rewarded with an economy enjoying enormous growth, with this pattern expected to continue strongly in the future with the arrival of the rail line,” she said.

Manufacturing remains the region’s top performing industry, growing from $1.5 billion in 2007 to $2.8 billion at the end of last year. ‘Manufacturing’ includes industries like technical equipment and appliances, chemical production, rubber and plastic products and more. Property and business services remained the second largest sector in both years.

“Council’s Economic Development team makes available to local businesses a suite of economic reports so they can access very detailed information relevant to their industry that will assist in their business planning,” Mayor Byrne said.

“We value our business community highly and want to make sure they are supported in every way we can.”

REMPLAN Economy is just one of the reports available. It provide insights into the structure of the economy, with maps that generate economic sub-profiles. Population profiles and forecast information is also available.

“If business want a detailed understanding about the local economy for their planning purposes, they can contact Council’s Economic Development Unit on 9843 0555, or request a one-to-one business visit by searching for ‘Business’ at www.thehills.nsw.gov.au,” she said.
