Have your say on a Smeaton Grange Resource Recovery Facility

A proposal to build a recycling facility at Smeaton Grange is on exhibition from today for community feedback.

The Department of Planning and Environment is keen to hear the community’s views on the proposal from Benedict Recycling Pty Ltd, which seeks to construct and operate the facility on 52 Anderson Road, Smeaton Grange that will process up to 140,000 tonnes per year of non-putrescible waste.

Waste to be processed at the site will include; gyprock, bricks, glass, metal, wood, rubber, plastics, paper, concrete, asphalt, sand, soil and garden waste.

Hazardous solid waste (including asbestos) will not be accepted at the site. $4.5 million will be spent on the development, which is estimated to create 15 local jobs once the facility is complete.

A spokesperson for the Department of Planning and Environment said the local community always has an opportunity to share their views.

“Community consultation is an integral part of the planning process and the applicant will have to respond to the feedback we receive,” the spokesperson said.

“This feedback is taken into consideration as part of the assessment.

“It’s easy to participate by going online and we encourage everyone to take a look and have their say.”
