Have your say on the Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2021

Council has prepared a Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan in consultation with people with a disability, community groups, and service providers.

As a requirement of the 2014 Disability Inclusion Act, the plan reviewed community perceptions of positive attitudes and behaviours towards people with a disability, livability and accessibility and the availability of employment opportunities – as well as examining Council’s systems and processes for ease of use.

Mayor of the Hills Shire, Councillor Yvonne Keane said inclusiveness for people of all abilities was a key priority and the plan would help to guide decisions about ensuring the services and facilities Council already provides are as accessible to and appropriate for people with disability as possible.

“One of my key themes as Mayor is to build an inclusive community and the Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan is a great litmus test that we are doing just that,” Mayor Keane said.

“Overwhelmingly, people were satisfied that The Hills is a safe and inclusive place for people with disabilities, and that Council services were accessible.

“Areas identified as having opportunity for improvement are around employment and training, as well as helping to build awareness and acceptance.

“I encourage everyone; people with a disability, families, carers, service providers, businesses, sporting groups, schools and interested residents to view the Draft and make comment,” Mayor Keane added.
