Mayor Celebrates Ethel Giles 107th Birthday

Mayor of The Hills Shire Council, Councillor Yvonne Keane, has joined family and friends in wishing long-time Baulkham Hills resident Ethel Giles a happy 107th birthday.

Mayor Keane, who presented Mrs Giles with a bouquet of flowers during her birthday celebrations at Woodbury Village on Saturday, said Mrs Giles had witnessed countless moments in history and was now celebrating her own incredible milestone.

“Ethel claims the title of the oldest person in the Hills Shire which is an amazing feat,” Mayor Keane said.

“This wonderful woman has dedicated many years to making a positive difference in our community and The Hills Shire Council thanks Mrs Gilles for her on-going contributions.

“Ethel is a humble person who is extremely kind and could also take the title of the loveliest person in the Sydney Hills.

“I wish Ethel a happy birthday, and continued happiness and joy.”

Mrs Giles was born in Glebe on September 24, 1909.

She moved to Baulkham Hills with her husband Alf in 1990 and lived in the same house up until earlier this year.

The couple were married for more than 50 years until Mr Giles passed away in 1992.

Mrs Giles worked as a secretary before taking time away from her career to raise three children — Graeme, Ron and Glenys.

She has seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren – and managed to meet two of her newest family members during her weekend birthday celebrations.

Mrs Giles enjoys eating all sorts of food, especially lollies – which could be one of the secrets behind her longevity.

During celebrations, the 107-year-old told partygoers that she looked forward to seeing everyone at her next birthday party.
