GALSTON GARDEN CLUB

Our annual Galston Open Gardens weekend features 8 formal and informal gardens is on the 14th, 15th and 16th October 9.30am-4.30pm. Put these dates in your diary. Why not visit 16 Lawrence Rd Kenthurst, a formal garden that leads into an Australian native garden, then, there is the beautiful 5 Laurie Rd Dural, a large English style collectors garden featuring more than 300 heritage and modern roses, with Irises and clematis. See also the best use of shade tolerant plants. No. 10 Belbowrie Place Galston showcases that a sloping block and poor soil can be transformed, while 25 Harrisons Lane Glenorie’s well established parklike five acres of garden beds, manicured hedges and Japanese garden is a delight. This is just a teaser; the other gardens will be featured next month. Look out for our brochures all over the Hills district and support this wonderful charity event.

Our guest speaker this month was perennial favourite Sonja Cameron from the multi award winning Cameron’s Perennial Wholesale Nursey Arcadia. Cameron’s has won numerous awards for their innovative approach to water conservation at their nursery. As usual Sonja gave an informative talk about perennial plants, their ease of care, new colour ranges and varieties. Sonja generously brought along a selection of plants that members eagerly snapped up for a special club price. We were also introduced to Cameron’s exciting new project where plants are available to the public by mail order. Register and order on line www.planterspatch.com.au for more information.

Next month our guest speaker is Paul Kirkpatrick “Le Potager – Edible Art” This presentation discusses the French tradition of ornamental vegetable gardening or ‘le potager’ where vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers are all grown gloriously together. We look at the history as well as present day examples of both romantic and formal potagers, including the King’s vegetable garden at Versailles and Chateau Villandry in the Loire Valley.
