Free plant giveaway and expert gardening advice at Hawkesbury Community Nursery

Hawkesbury City Council will be giving over 1,000 native plants to residents on Saturday, 30 July, at the annual Animal Shelter Open Day in association with Planet Ark’s National Tree Day. This year is the 21 st Anniversary of National Tree Day, which is proudly sponsored by Toyota Australia.

The plants that the Community Nursery will be giving away will help residents use less fertiliser, reduce water costs, and control pests as these plants prefer local conditions, overall helping achieve a healthy garden. For the 15 th year in a row, Hawkesbury City Council in conjunction with the Hawkesbury Community Nursery, has given away hundreds of native plants to local residents to celebrate National Tree Day.

Many people strive for a healthy garden, but everyone has experience with weeds at some point.

Hawkesbury River County Council will be there on the day, providing information on weed awareness, weed identification, weed control and weed legislation.

Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Kim Ford feels this event will help residents revamp their gardens and encourages residents to come along to the free Open Day and receive advice on improving their garden in time for Spring.

“Get all your gardening and weed questions answered in a one-stop shop, by local staff and volunteers who grow native plants at the nursery all year round” the Mayor said.

“Hawkesbury Community Nursery is a valuable facility owned by Council. This year, the Open Day and tree plant giveaway will launch Local Government Week which is the first week of August. The theme for Local Government Week this year is ‘Our Council, our Community’, and what better way to showcase our Community Nursery and get involved in our local community” he added.

The Hawkesbury Community Nursery will be open on Saturday, 30 July from 9am to 12 noon and Thursday, 4 August from 10am to 12 noon for residents to collect their plants.

Residents of the Hawkesbury are eligible to receive two free plants per person or six free plants per family as part of the giveaway. To receive your free plants, proof of residency is required. Plants will only be provided to residents and family members in attendance.

Hawkesbury Landcare will also be present to provide information on specific Landcare Groups in the Hawkesbury area. Talk to them about joining a Landcare group and feeling good about giving something back to the environment.

Hawkesbury Community Nursery is located at 10 Mulgrave Road, Mulgrave. The nursery is open every Wednesday from 9am – 1pm and sells plants to the general public. New volunteers at the Community Nursery and the Hawkesbury Bushcare program are always welcome.
