STRONGER COMMUNITIES PROGRAMME A BOOST FOR MITCHELL

The Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities Programme provided $150,000 over two years to fund small capital projects throughout the Hills district. Between $1,500 and $20,000 was available to reputable, not-for-profit organisations for local projects.

Round 1 and Round 2 provided funding contributions to four local school P&C Associations to assist in cooling their multipurpose buildings as well as upgrading common area seating and landscaping. As well as funding; electronic football scoreboard, upgrade soccer goals, purchase equipment, the upgrade of a scout hall and the purchase of equipment for the Hills State Emergency Services (pictured).

In the May Budget further funding was announced for a third round of the Stronger Communities Program (SCP) in 2017-18. As with previous rounds $150,000 will be available per electorate. Round 3 is expected to open later this year. To register your interest, please contact my office on 9899 7211.

GAMBLING ADVERTISING – ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS

The Turnbull Government has responded to community concern over the level of gambling advertising in live sport during children’s hours. On 6 May 2017 the Government announced that it will introduce additional restrictions on gambling promotions.

From March 2018, further restrictions will apply to gambling promotions during live sports programs broadcast before 8.30 pm on commercial television, commercial radio, subscription television and the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS). The restrictions will also apply to online platforms. Gambling promotions will not be able to be broadcast from five minutes before the scheduled start of play in a sports event and for five minutes after play, or to 8:30 pm, whichever comes first. The restrictions will apply between 5.00 am and 8.30 pm consistent with other protections for children, for example restrictions in relation to MA15+ programming, alcohol advertising and intimate products. This will reduce children’s exposure to gambling promotions and ensure a clear safe zone for children and families.

These further gambling advertising restrictions establish a clear safe zone for parents to have confidence that, throughout live sports broadcasts during these hours, children will not see any broadcast gambling promotions.
